A “Passion for Fashion” as a baby?

vida1

I used to laugh when I would watch Project Runway and contestants would say “I have loved fashion since I was in nappies.”

Er, ok then.

First of all, how do you know this? I often look at my 19 month old and think, you have just the best life, kid.

I mean. What a life. You get fed throughout the day, never have to do a little dance while driving on a highway for fear of peeing your pants, you get clothed, taken to activities, playgrounds and fun stuff. All the time.

And we adults were babies too once upon a time. Yes, however impossible to imagine through our gritted teeth while paying exorbitant electricity bills, the reality is, we were those kids without a care in the world at one point.

But like most things that happen when you are you know, a BABY, we don’t remember those times. Its impossible.

Or is it?

I used to think the fashionistas on Project Runway were smoking crack. No one knows what they want to be when they are infants. No one.

But then Vida was born. My littlest. And I shit you not, her “passion for fashion” at less than a year old just blew me away.

I, myself, am quite fond of headwear. Headbands, hats, beanies, headscarfs. Yes, they can look quite cool but if I am honest I wear them because, you know, bad hair day. And lazy.

Seems little Vida picked up on it real quick.

When she was around 12 months old, I first witnessed Vida’s wobbly little legs bend down and collect a discarded headband of mine, place it on her little head, take herself to the mirror, check herself out and then wear it for some hours. The fact that she kept it on her head positively astounded me.

My biggest girl, Sienna, abhorred headwear in every form as a baby. A headband wouldn’t last 3 seconds on her cute little dainty head it annoyed her so. Even now, accessories irritate the crap out of her and she only wears them because she is 4 and I tell her she must wear that pink headband to match her pink skirt because it just looks so cute don’t you think Sienna?

But this one, Vida, well , she’s a different story.

After headbands, she discovered bangles, and bags. At 14 months old I would watch her strut her stuff around the house wearing a bangle, bag and headscarf. I am not exaggerating for entertainments sake. The kid loves to accessorise.

On our first swimming lesson this year she wore arm floaties – something different to the Speedo floating body-suit we usually have her wear. She was in her element – she thought they were bright yellow, inflatable arm bangles and when we were instructed to remove them for learning sake she freaked out. Positively flipped her brain and demanded her designer accessories back.

Waaaaaa!

So I may have changed my tune about little babies having “hopes and dreams”. They are cleverer than we think.

And I can almost guarantee Vida will be fashion-obsessed and will even go so far to say WATCH THIS SPACE.
